The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District and Red Cross partnered together for the “Sound the Alarm” event in Fontana. County Staff and Community Volunteers installed 395 smoke alarms, provided education to 516 residents, and made a total of 135 homes safer.

The Sound the Alarm event was coordinated with the American Red Cross and is part of a nationwide initiative. The goal of the national series of Sound the Alarm events is to install 50,000 smoke alarms nationwide, helping decrease fire injuries and deaths. Local firefighters and volunteers visited residents offering to install smoke alarms, provide fire safety tips and answer any questions.

Events like this are an important part of “Community Risk Reduction”. Community Risk Reduction (CRR) As defined in NFPA 1300, Standard on Community Risk Assessment and Community Risk Reduction Plan Development, CRR is a process to identify and prioritize local risks, followed by the integrated and strategic investment of resources to reduce their occurrence and impact.
