Incident: Two Alarm Commercial Fire

Summary:

This morning #SBCoFD Crews were dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire in the 9800 block of Sierra Ave, Fontana. 911 callers stated smoke from a restaurant.

Firefighters quickly arrived on-scene to find heavy smoke showing from a center unit of a large strip mall. Crews deployed inside & on the roof to suppress the fire. Heavy smoke conditions and high heat were found inside the restaurant. Truck crews on the roof encountered heavy fire and smoke from their ventilation holes. They also found the fire had extended to a common attic space of the building. Due to the fire conditions & building size a second alarm was quickly struck, dispatching additional personnel and equipment to the fire.

Firefighters simultaneously worked on a fire attack, search of the occupancies, extension checks & vertical ventilation. The fire was brought under control within 28 minutes of arrival. Crews were successful in limiting the fire to one unit & the adjacent attic space. Multiple businesses & the majority of the building were saved. All searches of the building came up negative & no injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation by San Bernardino County Fire Investigators. Fontana PD assisted with traffic control for the incident.

While Fontana area crews were committed to the incident, multiple SBCoFD “Move-up Engines” were brought in to the area. This regionalized approach is vital to adequately staff an incident while ensuring there is uninterrupted fire and EMS coverage present.

San Bernardino County Fire responded with eight Engines, two Truck Companies, two Medic Squads, an Air/Light Unit, four Chief Officers, a Training/Safety Officer and three Fire Investigators.
