Summary:
Yesterday morning San Bernardino County Fire was dispatched to a reported unknown type fire in the 100 block of South Mt, Vernon, San Bernardino. ME221 arrived in the area to find a large exterior fire that had extended into a power pole and nearby commercial occupancy. The call was immediately upgraded to a full commercial fire response.
Arriving units found approximately 50 mattresses and other exterior items on fire and a single story commercial occupancy with smoke showing. While setting up for a fire attack the first engine heard screams from the building and observed an adult male trapped behind barred windows. Crews quickly cut the bars & rescued him from the burning building. He was treated immediately by firefighter-paramedics but declined treatment.
Firefighters were successful in knocking the fire down in approximately 30 minutes. Crews were able to limit the fire damage to the rear portion of the occupancy, saving a large portion of the binding and other nearby structures. Edison was requested to mitigate the downed power line hazard. No additional occupants were found inside the building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by SBCoFD Investigators.
San Bernardino County Fire responded with Five Engines, Two Truck Companies and a Battalion Chief. Colton Fire assisted with an Engine Company.
