Date/Time: May 10, 2021 at 11:49 a.m.
Location: Las Flores Ranch Area of Hesperia
Incident: Vegetation Fire

Today at 11:49 a.m., San Bernardino County Fire (SBCoFD) crews were dispatched to a reported vegetation fire in the area of Highway 173, just north of Lake Silverwood. Multiple 911 callers stated there was a fire in the hills south of Hesperia. Due to the fire being in the “mutual threat zone” or MTZ, both CALFIRE & United States Forest Service were notified and responded. Both agencies sent a full response, including aircraft.

Arriving crews made access off Highway 173 and found 1-2 acres in medium fuels burning at a moderate rate of spread with a potential of 1,000 acres. No immediate homes were in the area and threatened by the fire. Ground crews initiated a fire attack, working on perimeter control and line construction. Air assets arrived, assisting the crews on the ground with slowing the fire’s spread.

Air assets and ground crews from the multiagency response were successful in stopping the fire at 27 acres. The fire burned in the City of Hesperia, in the Las Flores Ranch area. The multi-agency response was successful in keeping the fire out of the San Bernardino National & California State Responsible Area. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire was adjacent to a recent training area but is unrelated to those training burns.

The multi-agency response was an integral component in keeping the fire small. Thanks to our cooperators for their assistance. Crews will remain on-scene throughout the evening working on mop-up and line construction. Tomorrow crews will also continue to harden containment lines and mop-up.
