Incident: Dog Rescue

Summary:

This afternoon San Bernardino County Fire crews were requested by San Bernardino County Animal Care for a dog stuck in an underground sinkhole. Once arrived, crews found a large husky dog down approximately 15 feet below a parking lot. Due to the entrapment hazard, potential complexity of the rescue crews on-scene requested additional crews including a SBCoFD Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team and an Excavator.

Fire crews utilized a specialized camera to assess the dog and sinkhole below them. While firefighters were setting up for a physical rescue, crews were able to slip a rope around the dog and quickly hoist it to safety. The dog appeared to be unharmed and was turned over to San Bernardino Animal Control staff for expeditious transport to a local veterinarian.

The dog had been heard barking and nearby citizens reported the rescue. It was unclear how long the dog was in the space. The scene was turned over to the property owner for repair.

San Bernardino County Fire responded with a Truck Company, USAR Unit, two Training / Safety Officers and a Battalion Chief.
