SAN BERNARDINO—San Bernardino County Fire responded to a fire in a building in San Bernardino’s south end late last night, working into the morning hours to prevent the fire’s spread to nearby structures.

With a large column of smoke visible from the 215 and I-10 freeways, the first engine company arrived at 1:05 a.m. and reported heavy fire conditions throughout the facility, which serves as a storage depot for general household goods. Crews assumed an exterior attack and quickly balanced the call to a second alarm. Multiple ladder truck companies used hose streams from their towers as engine crews used turret-mounted streams and large hand-held hose lines.

With popping sounds coming from numerous ruptured small aerosol cans and the unknown extent of the goods stored, a hazardous materials response was started. Their assessment deemed no Hazmat risk on scene The fire was declared under control at 2:55 a.m., with units remaining on scene for several hours in mop-up and overhaul mode.

Fifty-six personnel responded, including nine engine companies, four ladder trucks, two Hazmat units, two battalion chiefs, a safety officer, a fire investigator and an incident support unit.

The fire was held to the building of origin and no injuries were reported.

County Fire received assistance on the call from cooperating neighbor agencies @LomalindaFire, @coltonfiredept and @RialtoFireDept, as well as support from @SanBernardinoPD.
