Spending time in or around water is a great way to relax, have fun, and cool off. It also comes with serious risks. Whether swimming in a pool, enjoying a lake day, or heading to the beach, knowing and following water safety guidelines can help prevent tragedy and ensure everyone stays safe.

  1. Never leave any child alone in or near water, as drownings are their leading cause of death in the United States. Most drownings occur for children under the age of 5 in pools or hot tubs. It can happen in as little as 1″ of water.

  2. Always stay within arms reach when swimming with younger children. Put your phone away and be alert.

  3. Make sure your little ones always wear a life Coast Guard Certified life jacket. Floaties and pool noodles make fun toys. But, they are not a substitute as a life saving device.
  • Designate a responsible adult as a Water Watcher at all times
  • Stay within arm’s reach of young children (touch supervision)
  • Enroll children and adults in formal swim lessons
  • Install a four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates around pools
  • Use only Coast Guard approved life jackets, not pool toys, for safety
  • Avoid alcohol or impairing substances when supervising or swimming
  • Learn CPR and basic water rescue techniques
  • Always swim with a buddy, never alone
  • Watch for natural water hazards like currents or sudden drop-offs
  • Follow local advisories before swimming in lakes, rivers, or oceans
  • Keep phones and distractions away when supervising children near water
