Spending time in or around water is a great way to relax, have fun, and cool off. It also comes with serious risks. Whether swimming in a pool, enjoying a lake day, or heading to the beach, knowing and following water safety guidelines can help prevent tragedy and ensure everyone stays safe.
Water Safety Tips
- Never leave any child alone in or near water, as drownings are their leading cause of death in the United States. Most drownings occur for children under the age of 5 in pools or hot tubs. It can happen in as little as 1″ of water.
- Always stay within arms reach when swimming with younger children. Put your phone away and be alert.
- Make sure your little ones always wear a life Coast Guard Certified life jacket. Floaties and pool noodles make fun toys. But, they are not a substitute as a life saving device.
Water Safety Checklist
- Designate a responsible adult as a Water Watcher at all times
- Stay within arm’s reach of young children (touch supervision)
- Enroll children and adults in formal swim lessons
- Install a four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates around pools
- Use only Coast Guard approved life jackets, not pool toys, for safety
- Avoid alcohol or impairing substances when supervising or swimming
- Learn CPR and basic water rescue techniques
- Always swim with a buddy, never alone
- Watch for natural water hazards like currents or sudden drop-offs
- Follow local advisories before swimming in lakes, rivers, or oceans
- Keep phones and distractions away when supervising children near water
