Phelan, CA — Yesterday evening at 6:19 p.m., San Bernardino County Fire crews responded to a swift water rescue after reports of a dog trapped on a structural member in the middle of the California Aqueduct.
While conducting an unrelated aerial search for a missing person, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation helicopter spotted the stranded dog and immediately notified SBCoFD dispatchers.
One engine, one Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) unit, one Swift Water Rescue, one medic ambulance, and a Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. Crews quickly assessed the situation and recognized the urgency, as the swift current of the aqueduct posed an immediate threat to the animal’s safety.
Firefighters donned specialized swift water rescue gear and devised a rapid rescue plan. A rescuer was lowered down to secure a harness around the dog, allowing crews above to safely lift the animal out of the aqueduct and bring it to safety.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts, training, and quick action of all personnel involved, the dog was successfully rescued without injury.
“This rescue highlights the adaptability of our firefighters and the importance of interagency coordination,” said Battalion Chief Sean Solis. “We are grateful for the Sheriff’s Aviation crew spotting the animal and helping us bring it to safety.”
The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District reminds residents to keep pets safely away from swift water channels and aqueducts, as fast-moving water can be extremely dangerous.
