On April 19, 2025 #SBCoFD crews responded to a complex mine shaft rescue in a remote area southeast of 29 Palms.

Two individuals were stranded approximately 250 feet down an abandoned mine shaft after their rappelling equipment failed. A third companion who remained above ground called 911, allowing San Bernardino County Fire crews to begin coordinating rescue efforts.

Personnel from 29 Palms and Yucca Valley arrived first and requested additional resources. Specialized technical rescue teams from Fontana, Lake Arrowhead, and Hesperia responded as part of California Regional Task Force 6.

Crews utilized ARVs to navigate rugged terrain and transport equipment and personnel to the scene. After establishing communication with the trapped individuals and lowering water to them, a rescuer was safely lowered using a dual-line rope system.

Both victims were secured and hoisted to the surface without injury. The operation was completed just after 7 p.m.

County Fire received support from the Marine Corps Air Combat Center, Morongo Basin Ambulance, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

This incident demonstrates San Bernardino County Fire’s readiness to respond to emergencies in even the most challenging environments.
