Backyard Shed Fire Spreads to neighboring properties in Bloomington
Yesterday afternoon, San Bernardino County Fire crews responded to reported shed on fire in the backyard on the 18000 block of Hawthorne Avenue in Bloomington. Upon exiting the firehouse, the first due engine company captain immediately balanced the call to add units due to the large column of visible smoke in the sky.
First arriving companies found a fully engulfed shed, with a wind driven vegetation fire spreading rapidly to neighboring properties. The fire was burning behind homes and positioning house lines to protect those exposures was of paramount importance.
Firefighting efforts were complicated not only by the wind, but by perimeter fencings, downed powerlines, obstructed driveways, and fire hydrants located a significant distance away.
The fire ultimately spread across four separate properties and damaged one home. Crews worked tirelessly in tough conditions, demonstrating great effort and teamwork to combat the blaze.
A total of 40 personnel responded to the scene, including seven engine companies, one truck company, two squads, one battalion chief, one fire investigator, and one public information officer. Two engines were provided by the Rialto Fire.
There were no civilian injuries, but one firefighter was later transported with a minor leg injury.
Thank you to the City of Fontana Police Department and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for traffic control and assistance with evacuations.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the San Bernardino County Fire’s Office of the Fire Marshal.
