Landers, CA — Yesterday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m., San Bernardino County Fire responded to reports of smoke coming from a residence in the 59900 block of Lorraine Avenue in the community of Landers.

The first-arriving engine company encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-story home, with fire threatening a nearby barn located to the rear of the property. Firefighters were met by the homeowner, who reported that approximately 3,000 animals were housed within the two structures.

Crews quickly deployed hose lines in an effort to contain the fire and protect the barn, but strong winds hindered suppression efforts. The flames rapidly spread through the residence and extended into the barn, which contained a large number of exotic and domestic animals, including snakes, lizards, rabbits, and bearded dragons. Additional animals such as geese, goats, and turkeys were also located on the property. Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters focused their efforts on rescuing and saving as many animals as possible.

Due to the complexity and scale of the incident, a second alarm was requested. In total, nine engines, one battalion chief, one robotics unit, and one fire investigator responded to the scene. Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, both the home and barn were deemed a total loss.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighting personnel. At this time, the exact number of animal fatalities remains unknown.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Assistance was received by
@CALFIREBDU, @CALFIRERRU, @BLMca, and @CenterFirePIO.

San Bernardino County Fire urges all residents to never attempt to re-enter a burning structure, even to rescue pets or retrieve belongings. Fires can spread rapidly, and conditions inside can become deadly in seconds.
