On the evening of April 9, 2021 at 8:31 PM San Bernardino County Fire (#SBCoFD) crews were dispatched to a reported commercial fire in the 1300 block of East Highland Ave in the City of San Bernardino.
Crews arrived to find smoke showing from the rear of a vacant, large multi-story commercial building. Crews initiated an offensive fire attack, focusing their effort on a search for potential victims and locating the fire. Interior crews coordinated their efforts with truck crews on the roof performing vertical ventilation to aid in their efforts. Construction features, downed power lines and forcible entry issues complicated the fire fight.
During the firefight, conditions started deteriorating, leading to an “operational retreat.”
At one point there was also an explosion inside the rear of the building. Interior crews and truck crews retreated out of the building and off the roof. The change of strategy brought large volumes of water to be applied to the building from ladder pipes and exterior hose streams. Ultimately the fire was brought under control in 60 minutes. No victims were found in the structure and no personnel were injured. The fire is under investigation by #SBCoFD investigators.
San Bernardino County Fire responded with 7 Engines, 2 Truck Companies, 2 Chief Officers, 2 Fire Investigators and 1 Medic Squad.
