Fontana—Recently the crew from San Bernardino County Fire Station 81 in Fontana hosted a young family whose boy they had helped resuscitate from a grave medical condition. With the boy now healthy and active, it was an emotional reunion, inspiring our responders with the knowledge they made a difference, and providing closure to the family after a traumatic experience.
When they encountered four-year-old Jaxson, the firefighters from 81 quickly recognized a very sick child. What was eventually diagnosed as a ruptured appendix had left the boy in serious condition. Acting quickly, the three crew members—all experienced paramedics—went to work quickly bringing Jaxson back to a point where he had his best chance for survival and recovery.
The ambulance crew from AMR soon arrived, and the young boy was transported to the hospital.
The moment firefighters transfer patient care to ER physicians is often the last bit of contact they’ll have. This time, returning to the hospital at later date, Station 81’s crew saw the family and invited them to visit the firehouse for a chance to reconnect. The family eagerly accepted.
The video we present here highlights the best moments of that visit.
Conclusions like this don’t come about without teamwork. In this case, County Fire paramedics worked with crews from AMR and emergency department staff at Kaiser Fontana to provide Jaxson with quick and efficient care that brought about a full recovery. County Fire is proud to work alongside these tireless professionals every day.
