The Bridge Fire ignited on Sunday, September 8, 2024, in the East Fork area of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument near Cattle Canyon Bridge. Firefighters responded quickly to the fire, which spread rapidly through steep, rugged terrain filled with chaparral, short grass, and downed trees. The fire burned 56,030 acres across San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, impacting both public and recreational lands.
On the evening of September 10, 2024, the fire surged toward the mountain community of Wrightwood. San Bernardino County Fire deployed every available resource to protect the area, working in unified coordination with Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Angeles National Forest. Wrightwood residents had evacuation plans in place and followed them, which allowed firefighters to focus on structure defense. Many homes had defensible space, which played a significant role in preventing further damage. While the fire did take homes, the community remained largely intact thanks to strong planning and partnership between residents and responders.
Due to the fire’s remote location and heavy fuel load, visible smoke and interior flare-ups continued for several weeks. The incident was downgraded to a Type 4 response on October 5, signaling reduced complexity, but personnel remained on scene for monitoring. The Bridge Fire was declared fully contained on June 3, 2025. The cause remains undetermined. Angeles National Forest and the United States Forest Service managed the response throughout the duration of the incident.
