Four San Bernardino County Firefighters Sworn in as City of Fontana Police Department Reserve Officers & will serve as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Paramedics

Recently Captain/Paramedic Ryan Starling, Captain/Paramedic Spencer Brumbaugh, Engineer/Paramedic Brandon Miller and Firefighter/Paramedic Brent Sargenti were sworn in as City of Fontana Police Department Reserve Police Officers. The four #SBCoFD personnel work hand in hand with Fontana Police to provide Paramedic care in a law enforcement capacity as part of Inland Valley SWAT (IVS) Team.

SWAT Paramedics are responsible for the safety of all officers, civilians, and suspects on scenes that traditional medics cannot enter due to safety reasons. Attaching paramedics to the Inland Valley SWAT Team eliminates the need for patients/victims to wait while a hostile situation is stabilized; instead, life-saving efforts can commence immediately providing timely and critical service to the community and its citizens. A higher level of medical care can be administered immediately without delay in high risk situations.

To be eligible to be serve on the SWAT team, members trained for more than a year to meet the minimum requirements as required by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Program (POST). POST is a regulatory program with responsibility for licensing peace officers, ensuring compliance with peace officer continuing education requirements. The four personnel completed POST Level 2 & 3 Academies, POST SWAT school, POST Tactical Medic School and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course.

The paramedics assigned to the SWAT team have multiple disciplines that assist the IVS SWAT Team with tactical situations that encompass HAZMAT, USAR, confined space problems or fire suppression and are used as needed by the SWAT Commanders. They are also able to coordinate with the fire department in real time as an agency representative during critical incidents. The SWAT Paramedics are supplemented by two Trauma Physicians from ARMC.

These cross-trained personnel will assist Fontana Police Department with their law enforcement mission, allowing immediate care to citizens and law enforcement personnel. San Bernardino County Fire and Fontana Police have a long standing traditional of collaborating to provide the best service to the citizens of Fontana and the surrounding areas.
