The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District has been awarded a substantial grant of $701,800 from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, facilitated through the California Climate Investments Fire Prevention Grants Program. This funding is earmarked for a vital project aimed at enhancing wildfire preparedness across San Bernardino County: the development and update of Wildland-Urban Interface Pre-Plans (WUIPP). These plans are essential in outlining strategies for firefighting efforts within communities that are located at the intersection of wildland and urbanized areas, known for their heightened vulnerability to wildfires.

The grant will enable the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District to either create new or update existing WUIPPs, covering a significant number of communities throughout the county. Currently, 20 communities have funded WUIPPs, but an additional 58 communities stand to benefit from this initiative. The plans are comprehensive, detailing tactical firefighting strategies neighborhood by neighborhood, thus equipping both local and visiting firefighters with the knowledge needed for effective fire suppression. Furthermore, the WUIPPs include critical information for emergency situations, such as evacuation points, routes, incident command post locations, staging areas, helispots, and safety zones, thereby enhancing the overall safety and preparedness of the communities involved.

The grant agreement, effective through March 15, 2026, mandates no additional use of Discretionary General Funding, ensuring that the project’s financial impact is well-contained within the scope of the awarded funds. This strategic use of grant money not only underscores San Bernardino County’s commitment to operating in a fiscally responsible manner but also significantly contributes to the safety and well-being of its residents by improving fire prevention and preparedness measures.

This initiative aligns with broader county goals and objectives, including fostering a safe environment for all residents and efficiently managing resources to address critical needs. By collaborating with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is taking a proactive approach to mitigate the risks associated with wildfires, particularly in areas where urban development and wildland intersect. The project reflects a concerted effort to enhance community resilience against wildfires through strategic planning and preparedness, thereby safeguarding lives, properties, and natural resources against the escalating threat of fire incidents.
